The Institute for International Liberal Education (IILE) Munhumutapa is inspired by IILE at Bard College of Liberal arts in New York. Formed at Bard in 1998, IILE seeks to advance the theory and practice of international liberal arts education for human development in Africa and beyond. Building on the ancient African culture of Ubuntu undergird by mutual reciprocity, IILE Munhumutapa seeks to leverage on international educational partnerships based on mutuality and equality, with a focus on the complete individual student journey and measurable solutions to real life problems.
The IILE Munhumutapa seeks to create dynamic relationships through which we and our partner institutions learn from each other’s’ ideas and experience, contributing to tangible intellectual and policy solutions to specific problems.

Student and Scholar Services (ISSServ)
OISSS provides individual assistance to international students, faculty, and their families through advisement concerning federal immigration laws, tax and labor relations, and support related to personal, academic, professional, and cultural matters.
IILE Munhumutapa Abroad Programs (MAPs)
Bard College has long been known as an innovator and risk taker in the field of higher education. We believe that international education should be built upon meaningful partnerships based on the principles of mutuality and equality. Our groundbreaking study abroad programs, located in regions undergoing rapid political and economic transformation continue this tradition.
IILE Munhumutapa Study Abroad
A significant percentage of Bard students participate in at least one international program during their time at the College. Some spend a year, a term, or a summer studying abroad. Others work with leading international organizations or on community projects outside the United States. Additionally, some academic programs use videoconferencing to hold joint courses with partner institutions overseas, while others offer the opportunity for off-site study and research.
IILE Visiting and Exchange Students
Throughout the academic year, Bard College welcomes visiting and exchange students from institutions within its international network as well as institutional exchange partners. Exchange students are billed according to the specific interinstitutional agreement between Bard College and their institution. Costs of attending may differ from those posted on this website. Whether at Bard’s Annandale campus, Bard College Berlin, or Bard NYC, students take part in an immersive cultural program during their terms.
During the summer months, there are numerous science-based study opportunities for Bard network and exchange students at the undergraduate level. Students should contact the international education office at their home institutions regarding such opportunities at Bard College.
IILE Language Intensives and Study Abroad
Most foreign languages taught at Bard can be studied in an intensive format that offers both an accelerated pace of learning at Bard and a one- or two-month program, offered either during the summer or winter break, in a country of the language of study. These programs are designed to build on academic year studies and help students gain a command of a foreign language. The intensive format allows students to complete the equivalent of two years of language study in a few months. The immersion format, currently offered in German, is even more accelerated than the intensive format.
